These
joint pain diseases can run from just minor pain to the severe cases of
joint and arthritis pain that can be almost debilitating to
our pets and greatly reduce the quality if life of our beloved dogs and
pets
Usually
dogs have more serious joint and arthritis problems associated with
their hips and leg joints than do cats. Larger dogs tend to
have more severe levels of pain associated with arthritis and joint
problems than do the smaller breeds
Regardless of the size or breed we
do have dog joint pain medication available to us that will
help relieve joint pain
with almost any dog or cat and other animals including horses.
When
our dogs are young puppies we very seldom think of the day when they
will develop
health problems including joint and arthritis pain.
Young
puppies are full of energy and vitality and add a lot to the happiness
of the owners. As our dogs mature and age they tend to develop joint
and hip problems that are accompanied by pain in most cases.
One
of the first signs that our dogs may be developing joint and or
arthritis pain will probably be their reluctance to jump and run around
or go up and down the stairs.
Additional symptoms of pain may
include decreased appetite, shivering, lack of energy, inability or
unwillingness to move and a noticeable change of attitude. Please keep in mind
that your dog may be in pattern of recurring levels of pain.
A
lot of times a dog may become withdrawn and irritable and develop a
habit of snapping or event biting when approached
In
my case I noticed our dog was not making the trip down our
long
driveway to the mailbox as he always had with me.. At first I thought
maybe he was just taking a day off.
As time went on
I discovered
he appeared to be favoring one of his legs. In short order we
were able to determine that he had no apparent physical injuries and
determined through a visit to the Vet that he was in the early stages
of Arthritis.
As time goes on dogs will acquire
additional stiffness and joint pain associated with Arthritis.
If
your dog has gradually become less active and lethargic it is a pretty
good bet that he has some joint pain possibly associated with Arthritis.
Dog
joint pain is affected by cold weather and aging. As our beloved dogs
begin to age we should be aware of these potential health problems.
For
most of us our dogs and cats represent a loyal friend and are
considered a regular member of our families.
Because
of this we owe it to our pets to give them the best medical attention
we can and be aware of any pain or discomfort they may be enduring.
We
need to remember that our pets cannot tell us when they are in pain but
if we watch for the signs we can assist our pets in maintaining a high
quality of life.
CAUSES OF DOG JOINT PAIN
There
can be any number of causes for dog joint pain. A dog may
have
been born with joint and hip problems. As dogs age they tend
to
increase in body weight just as humans do. This of course can put a
strain on the joints and hips.
Another common reason
is being
hit by a automobile. A lot of times our dogs sustain a serious injury
and
when this happens it can certainly affect the joints and exacerterbate
joint pain.
Other causes include
progressive cartilage
deterioration, loss of cartilage and components, changes in the bone
structure, loss of mobility and joint space.
In
addition their can be inflammation of synovial membrane that also
creates pain.
Once
we suspect that our pet may have joint pain and possibly
arthritis we should immediately consult with your Vet to get the proper
diagnosis and ensure that our pets do not suffer needlessly.
A
Vet will be able to make the proper diagnosis and suggest a course of
treatment that will help relieve your pet's pain and suffering thus
resulting in a higher quality of life for your pet.
